Developers from 22 countries submitted 400 multimedia works to the Milia d'Or (Golden Milia) pre-selection committee made up of 25 distinguished experts and journalists from around the world (Australia, Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States). The Grand Jury that selected winners was made up of three members from France, two from the United States, and one each from Germany, Belgium, and Japan.
The Milia d'Or Ceremony took place on the evening before the last day of the conference. Sponsored by Havas, the French advertising and multimedia company, and New Line Cinema, the American film and video production company, the event filled the main auditorium at the Palais des Festivals and provided the 2,300 attendees with a glimpse of the winning titles in a setting directed by the Master of Ceremonies, actor-comedian Charles Fleischer.
Developers received awards in seven main categories decided by the Grand Jury - the final selection group led by musician Jean-Michel Jarre. [Author's Note: Jarre is quite well-known in France and Europe as well as other places in the world. You can get to know his work through his Internet-based creation, "A Space for Tolerance" sponsored by the French Ministry of Culture.]
The Grand Prize went to Scrutiny in the Great Round from Calliope Media in the US. Combining "Tennessee Rice Dixon's images depicting the ebb and flow of life with an eclectic mix of poetry and music," this work is considered by some to be the first real, full-length "interactive art form."
Other main awards were as follows:
